A multi purpose tree

Tagasaste - or tree lucerne, would have to be one of the most versatile, and valuable trees, we have.

It's fast growing, and as a legume, fixes nitrogen in the soil. Therefore it can grow in the most inhospitable places and soils. The leaves and twigs can be used for animal fodder, especially in dry summers.  Birds, bees and bumble bees find the flowers irresistable and as it flowers from late winter, it's becomes a valuable food source for these creatures.

Our keruru, tui and bellbirds delight in the flowers and fresh new shoots.

The timber makes excellent firewood, and as the tree can be coppiced, it's an ongoing firewood supply.

Every garden should have one !
