Trees for beautiful autumn colour

Thursday, 31 May 2012

It's the time when we can enjoy the glorious autumn leaves....falling into deep drifts under their trees, and producing a fiery display on the trees. Depending on where you live, some trees will have already lost some of their leaves, (maybe all), but you'll still remember where they were, and maybe even know the name of the tree. If you're unsure of the tree species, maybe ask the property owners...they most likely will be happy to share information about their trees. If you have favourite trees in parks, then check with the maintenance crew....they'll be able to help you. It's also a good idea to visit a local tree nursery, and take a note of any trees there that you like. Franks Trees near Nelson has an excellent selection of large trees, many still with beautiful leaf colour. If you live near Gisborne, the Eastwoodhill Arboretum is a wonderful place to visit at this time of year. Deciduous trees are usually planted in winter, as many are sold `bare-rooted'. Go and check them out now, and select one to give your garden a burst of colour every autumn.
