Unusual flowers in spring
The unusual small pink pompoms of the Oriental Plane ( Platanus orientalis) trees on a beautiful Nelson spring morning. Plane trees make wonderful shade trees, and are very tough. They’re often used for street planting, as they can cope with the reflected heat and light from the pavements. The London Plane is often seen in streetscapes, and is heavily pruned in winter in some areas. There are many old, pruned trees lining Collingwood Street in Nelson City. In Nile Street East, the Nelson City Council has planted Platanus orientalis, and let them grow to magnificent large shade trees, on both sides of street, this gracious part of town.
